Newt, Palestinians and the GOP debate: Transcript & commentary

As we reported earlier, Newt Gingrich's description of the Palestinians as an "invented people" (watch above) grabbed some attention at Saturday night's GOP debate. While most of the GOP field is usually eager to side with Israel, on this point Gingrich got some pushback -- from Ron Paul (no surprise), but also from Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.

The transcript of that portion of the debate is below. But first three points:

1) I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that this entire brouhaha revolves around the assumption that being an "invented people" is a bad thing -- even though these folks are all willing to endure the never-ending campaign trail and ultimately spend hundreds of millions of dollars for the opportunity to serve as president of the United States. Newt's the one with the PhD in history, but I feel quite confident in saying that Americans are a pretty invented bunch. (And then there's the fact that most of the GOP candidates have supported the use of hundreds of billions of dollars to reinvent the even more recently invented country of Iraq, and keep the equally recently invented Iraqi people from being torn apart by centuries-old sectarian and ethnic divisions.)
